Midstream contractor for Grande Prairie & the Montney.

Gas plants, compressor stations and liquids facilities across northwest Alberta and northeast BC.

Midstream experience, Montney-ready

The Montney formation runs from around Grande Prairie in northwest Alberta across the border to Dawson Creek and Fort St. John in northeast British Columbia. It’s one of North America’s most active natural gas and natural gas liquids plays, and its growth is tied to new demand, including LNG exports from Canada’s west coast.

Every well drilled in the Montney needs somewhere to go: gathering systems, compressor stations, gas processing plants, liquids handling and pipelines. That’s midstream work, and it’s what Rice Brothers built its name on in the Permian Basin. Compressors, separators, dehydration units, slug catchers, refrigeration and skid-mounted process equipment are the same in Texas and in Alberta. The winters aren’t.

Our Calgary office manages Montney projects, and crews mobilize to sites around Grande Prairie, Dawson Creek, Fort St. John and the surrounding Peace Region.

Midstream gas processing equipment

What we bring to Montney operators

One contractor for the facility, from first drawing to ongoing maintenance.

Full EPC

Engineering, procurement and construction from one team, so scope gaps between contractors don’t become your problem.

Self-perform crews

Piping, mechanical, structural, and electrical and instrumentation crews of our own, mobilized to the lease.

Brownfield expansions

Debottlenecking, added compression and tie-ins at facilities that are already flowing gas.

Maintenance

Ongoing maintenance and turnaround support for gas plants and compressor stations. See plant maintenance.

Water & storage

Produced water, saltwater disposal and liquids storage. See storage & treatment.

Emissions control

Flare and emissions control upgrades that help facilities meet tighter methane and emissions rules.

Working in the Peace Region

Montney projects often sit on remote leases with long drives, seasonal road restrictions and short construction windows. We plan logistics and material delivery around road bans and weather, and we sequence work so crews stay productive through freeze-up and spring breakup.

Projects that straddle the Alberta and BC border bring two sets of provincial rules for safety, permitting and trades. We confirm the requirements that apply to each site before mobilizing. Every worker completes company orientation, Basic Plus+, site-specific orientation, pre-employment drug and alcohol screening, respirator fit testing, a medical evaluation and physical, and NCCER or equivalent industry certification before starting work.

Many operators start with a single compressor station or skid installation and bring us back for expansions and maintenance. That long-term relationship is how Rice Brothers built its midstream reputation in the United States, and it’s how we intend to build it in the Montney.

Gas processing in the Montney is also changing as operators push for lower emissions and higher liquids recovery. Electrified compression, vapour recovery, refrigeration upgrades and flare reduction projects are adding brownfield work at existing facilities. These are exactly the tie-in and revamp projects our crews handle every day: work inside operating sites, planned around production, with careful isolation, testing and turnover. Whether your project is a new station or an upgrade to one that’s been running for a decade, we can engineer it, build it and maintain it.

Montney facilities also tend to grow in phases. A station built for today’s volumes is often expanded twice in its first decade, so we design and build with future tie-in points, space for added compression and clear documentation that makes the next phase faster and cheaper.

Montney FAQ

Quick answers to what clients ask us most. There’s more on our FAQ page.

Do you work on both the Alberta and BC sides of the Montney?

Yes. We serve Grande Prairie and northwest Alberta as well as Dawson Creek, Fort St. John and northeast BC.

What midstream facilities do you build?

Compressor stations, gas and liquid processing, dehydration units, separators, slug catchers, vessels, refrigeration, skid-mounted equipment, and pipe and pipe modules.

Can you add compression or expand an existing gas plant?

Yes. Brownfield expansions, debottlenecking and tie-ins at operating facilities are a large part of our midstream work.

Do you provide engineering as well as construction?

Yes. We offer engineering and design as part of full EPC delivery, or construction to a design you already have.

How do you handle spring breakup and road bans?

We plan material delivery and heavy hauls around seasonal road restrictions and sequence the work so crews stay productive through freeze-up and breakup.

Where does your midstream experience come from?

Rice Brothers has built midstream facilities for many years in the Permian Basin and beyond. Rice Brothers Canada brings that experience to Montney projects.
